Real-time control

Real-time control

Touch OSC

The modular OSC and MIDI control surface called TouchOSC is used for manipulating a Pure Data patch.

We desinged our own PD patch (the one submitted to Lab 4) and its corresponding TouchOSC surface to control some parameters of a synthesizer, which was developed to recreate kind of chemical bubbles, reactions and lava sounds involved in the universe and earth evolutions. Some of the parameters are LFO rate, waveform, amplitude or master volume.

Wekinator

The interactive machine learning in real-time software called Wekinator is used to map gestures from the web camera, by using this Processing code, to this PD patch and convert them into meaningful real-time changes on the timbre of the synthesized sound.

VST

In order to enhace the performance, we also add some atmospherical and drone synths during the whole piece. VST instruments such as ‘Ultra Analog VA-2‘ and ‘Synthmaster‘ have been chosen for this task.

Structure and sound material

Structure and sound material

1. Introduction: Big bang and the ‘OM’ sound.

The very beginning of soundscape starts from the combined emulation of the concepts of Big Bang and Hindu Vedic theories. As a creative process itself we give more emphasis to the creative realm of soundscape rather than simply emulating a scientific theory. The piece starts with an aggressive impact that eventually evolves into the “OM” sound that gave us the impression of the creation of universe.

Sound material:

– “OM”
– Impact
– Ambience sound
– Glitch sounds

2. Cosmic evolution.

In this phase,  we are expressing the evolution of universe from the first particle till the moment of Earth’s appearence. It involves the expansion of universe and the creation of hydrogen, stars, planets, etc. We are using a combination of audio samples and VST synthesizers to recreate our desired soundscape.
Sound material:

– Ambience sound
– Glitch sounds
– Sweep sounds
– Bubble sounds

3. Evolution of earth.

The final phase of our piece is about the evolution of earth and the life itself. It started by depicting the molten state of earth. Then, it moved to a gradual formation of O2 and H20 that resulted in a heavy rain. This rain evolved into the formation of oceans. After the creation of atmosphere and oceans, Earth became a calm and silent place; from this point, we gradually introduced some nature and animals sounds to gave the impression of the living creatures evolution. We are also focusing on using harmonic sounds along with these to indicate the lively feel of life.

Sound material:

– Ambience/atmospheric sound
– Rain
– Thunders and storms
– Ocean
– Ocean Creatures
– Animals such as birds, monkeys or ocean creatures
– Lava
– Wind

Abstract:

On this project we are trying to emulate the soundscapes of the universe evolution by using a sequence of sounds: from the great mystery of the universe’s origin to the different nature soundscapes recreating the creation of our Earth.

Over the centuries mankind has been searching for a proper explanation on the origin of universe. Many theories and explanations have been provided until now, both scientific and religious ones. One of the most accepted scientific theories is the well known big-bang theory. Despite the fact that it doesn’t give legitimate all inclusive logical clarification about the things before huge explosion, so distant from things we know or expect, we proceeding with our undertaking. In addition, we will be also using hindu vedic theories or myths about the origin of universe. According to it, after the big explosion there was this sound “OM” which is the core sound of universe and everything on universe was build upon this.

Our musical piece will evolve using harmonic and inharmonic sounds recreating the different stages of the universe expansion and planets’ creation and will conclude by nature soundscapes representing the final stage of birth and growth of planet Earth.
